An AI chat widget can help visitors find resources, ask pre-sales questions, and start a self-assessment. It can also create misleading answers, unexpected API spend, and a new support surface if it is launched casually.
Define the assistant job
Do not launch a vague “””ask me anything””” bot. Give the assistant a narrow job: explain site resources, guide visitors to self-assessment, answer pricing questions from published pages, and suggest contacting support when the answer depends on a real system review.
Limit the knowledge boundary
The assistant should prefer approved site content, sample reports, pricing, policies, and selected checklists. It should not invent service terms, promise compliance, or make security guarantees.
Control cost before launch
Set a daily spend limit, per-user message limit, short context window, and a fallback response when the model provider fails. A small site still needs cost controls because spam traffic can find exposed chat endpoints.
Track useful events
Measure chat opens, first questions, self-assessment clicks, audit-page clicks, email clicks, and failed responses. If chat does not create one of those outcomes, it is decoration.
Keep admin tools disabled
A visitor-facing chat assistant should not manage WordPress, plugins, files, database records, or publishing workflows. Those capabilities belong in private admin tools, not public widgets.
Quick checklist
- Launch on high-intent pages first, not globally.
- Use a narrow system prompt and approved links.
- Set usage and spend limits before public exposure.
- Track chat-to-lead behavior in analytics.
- Do not expose site-management tools to public chat.
How to use this
Use this guide as a working review aid, not as a compliance certificate. A team preparing an AI agent for production should pair it with traces, test cases, policy decisions, and a named owner for each unresolved risk.
